Gretchen stood clutching bird-thin hands on the chair back. She looked like a mummified corpse. Her bright lipstick was a gruesome slash across her face. Even her yellow hair had thinned, dry and brittle as straw.

Commentary * Gretchen's real name is Gretel. This is what she was called before she became a vampire.

* She is at least 100 years old, possibly 200.

* She was created by Jean-Claude and as a result, he can control many things about her, including her physical appearance. However, she herself is a master vampire, as she has partial immunity to silver as one of her "gifts."

* Gretchen is desperately in love with Jean-Claude.

* Gretchen is still alive, although Jean-Claude put her into a coffin after she had threatened Anita.
