Ben the nurse was smiling. "We weren't expecting them to send us a policeman so... petit."
I frowned at him. "Smile when you say that."
His smile brightened in a flash of white teeth. The smile softened the face and made him seem less Nurse Ratched and more like a human being.

Commentary * Ben is one of the nurses tending the "victims" in New Mexico in the hospital, because their raw open wounds are similar to burn wounds, so the same protocol is in place.

* Later, when one of the zombie-like patients is running loose, Ben must beat it off his arm, as it has sunk its teeth so deeply it cannot be dislodged.

* Presumably, he survived the zombie attack, but there is no further mention of his still being alive in the book.
